We assess the dogs in foster homes and are very honest about their behaviour, temperament and needs. Please read more on our Adoption Page

We are looking for forever homes for our dogs, so please read our dog profiles carefully. Before you contact us, please consult thoroughly with your family: you need to be certain that you can give the dog what it needs both now and for the rest of its life.

Sadly we see spiraling numbers of dogs who suffer terribly because their owners can't afford the lifelong care they need.   Keeping a dog is expensive (especially when they are ill or injured) so please do not apply for one of our dogs unless you are able to pay for it to be kept in the best of health.  We strongly suggest you take out INSURANCE to cover vets bills click HERE

WE DO NOT normally REHOME DOGS WHERE THERE ARE CATS OR CHILDREN UNDER 5 YRS.

DOGS MUST NEVER BE LEFT ALONE WITH CHILDREN.
for information about correctly managing dogs and children here are two good guides from the Kennel Club and Victoria Stilwell

The behaviour of dogs is improved using POSITIVE REWARD BASED TRAINING, FOR VIDEOS SHOWING PRACTICAL EXAMPLES CLICK HERE scroll down to see all 10

Dogs cannot be left alone for 8-9 hours.  SO IF YOU WORK FULL TIME we will not rehome a dog to you unless you employ a dog sitter or dog walker, and we recognise there is expense involved with providing this for the dog.  Here is a good example of a professional dog walker that we recommend in the Kirklees area DOGGYNANNY

WE DO NOT SELL DOGS, however we ask for a Charitable donation to be provided on adoption to help towards keeping the rescue running.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT LET DOGS GO OUT "ON TRIAL". You may see the dogs as many times as you like before deciding whether or not to adopt.  Most rescue dogs have been through great stress and taking them home only to return them a short time later because owners change their minds would be cruel and damaging.  Dogs quickly form attachments and must not be returned as if they were mere objects.  So please, think very carefully and don't just take a dog on a whim.  As an adopter you should understand that it can take several weeks for a dog to settle into your home.  You must be prepared to commit to doing whatever is necessary to help your dog become a secure and happy family member. Our returns policy exists purely for those rare circumstances where a new owner is unavoidably unable to keep their new pet.

To follow progress of our dogs in their new homes you can "like" our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/WestYorkshireDogRescue

FINALLY - no dog in any rescue anywhere in the UK is a perfect dog.  If you want a PERFECT DOG we have the information you need to obtain one, please click PERFECT DOG

< Tigger !!!

The wonderful thing about Tiggers

Is Tiggers are wonderful things!

Their tops are made out of rubber

Their bottoms are made out of springs...

This super dog is a youngster about 10 months old who is currently underweight and very leggy but will fill out over time as he matures.  He lives up to his name, being a lively happy chappie with a big smile on his face. He just wants to bounce round you and run and run and run.

Tigger is just a cuddle monster who loves loads of cuddles and affection, he is very loving and loyal.

Tigger would suit an active family of older teenagers who are out and about a lot and who want to play with him and train him.  As he is so active he would suit sports such as dog agility and flyball with training.

Tigger needs a sympathetic knowledgeable owner who knows kind training techniques as he is still a puppy and has no training.  He will need someone around most of the time.

Neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped.

< Keano

Keano is mostly Whippet with a small amount of Staffie and Collie in him.  He is slightly nervous and bewildered, as he has been separated on hand-in from his lifelong companion.  We strongly recommend he goes to live with another dog as a companion.

Keano is gentle and kind, lightweight in the hand even if he pulls on the lead it isn't too strong, would suit a peaceful, calm, quiet household.  He enjoys his walks and if it is cold or raining will need to wear a coat.

Keano loves to snuggle up on the sofa by a warm fire to watch TV with you and just wants to be with you.

Keano is a slender dog so is not very strong on the lead we don't yet know what his recall is like off lead.

Keano travels well in the car and loves human company so will come on holiday with you and out and about and be your best friend.

Neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped.

< Roo

Roo is a whippet sized, 2 years old Lurcher with a very sweet nature.  He is 20 inches at the shoulder.  He has lived with dogs, cats and children and is a lovely loyal family pet.

Roo just arrived into our rescue from kennels so at the moment he is totally BONKERS !!  he is over excited, glad to be out, charging about the place and humping the foster's leg, all this will calm down because he has had very little exercise and needs to let off steam.  He is very playful with the foster's terriers and just loves life and lives it to the full.  Exceptionally kind and affectionate, but as I have said, at the moment he is totally BONKERS with delight at getting out. Loves to play tug of war with the terriers.

Roo knows basic commands and walks nicely on the lead.  He needs to be rewarded for good behaviour otherwise he gets nervous and feels threatened if you shout at him as he is a gentle kind soul.  We are looking for calm, kind, patient owners who know how to bring the best out of a dog and give it confidence not shout at it all the time.  It is obvious this dog has not had sympathetic handling in the past.

Roo loves to snuggle up on the sofa by a warm fire to watch TV with you and just wants to be with you.

Roo is a slender dog so is not very strong on the lead we don't yet know what his recall is like off lead.

ROO CANNOT BE LEFT ALONE IN THE HOUSE HE SUFFERS FROM SEPARATION ANXIETY AND MUST HAVE SOMEONE AORUND MOST OF THE TIME AND ANOTHER DOG FOR COMPANY.

Roo is good with children but can't live with children under 10 years as he is too boisterous and would knock them flying without meaning to hurt them.

Roo is very well trained and knows basic commands.

Roo travels well in the car and loves human company so will come on holiday with you and out and about and be your best friend.

Neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped.

< Rigsby

PLEASE FORM AN ORDERLY QUEUE FOR THIS DOG HE IS ONE IN A MILLION

This is a real treasure of a dog who will make a wonderful friend and with the right training will be a truly great dog who could go to the top in Obedience.  As he is very immature he has a low level of concentration so will need short training sessions designed to be fun, interspersed with long walks and play.

Rigsby is a stunning one year old Rhodesian Ridgeback cross standing 25 inches at the shoulder.  We are looking for a mature family home with big dog experience.

This dog is as soft as butter he is a real cuddle bug!!!.  He is very loving and affectionate with everyone he meets, slightly shy at first but soon becomes your friend.  He snuggles up against your leg for a cuddle and loves being scratched on the chest.  This is one of the nicest kindest dogs you could meet and is very playful with a puppy-like attitude to life, he enjoys playing with dogs although he can be too boisterous at times.

Rigsby is CAT FRIENDLY and lives with a cat who he considers is part of his family, although he thinks it is fun to have a quick chase of cats outside the house.

He loves children he meets in the street although he has never lived with children, we are looking for a family of older teenagers as he is too boisterous for little ones.

Rigsby pulls on the lead so wears a harness with short lead to keep him by your side and is perfectly controllable in that - but a strong fit owner will be needed who is a competent dog handler with big dog experience.

Rigsby needs to burn off energy for half an hour off lead before he gets any training to ensure he concentrates on what you are saying to him.

Rigsby needs to be the only dog in the home so that he can develop a good one to one relationship with his owner of consistent, kind handling.

Rigsby will need someone around most of the time, a big house and fully fenced big garden, big car, and financially secure home with a commitment to his future forever.

This is a dog for an experienced dog handler accustomed to reward based training and kind approach as he is very puppy-like and has low concentration span.  Reward training is important as he is slightly shy and needs constant repetition of the same consistent commands rather than being shouted at and punished or his lovely temperament will be ruined.

A super young dog who just needs the right home and he will flourish.

Neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped

< Gaynor

Gaynor is a 5 to 6 years old fabulous Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross with Labrador cross Collie her from her father's side.  She is just less than knee height at the shoulder.  She is a very kind dog who is friendly with adults, children and other dogs.  Unknown with cats.

Gaynor loves her walks, she runs off lead and plays with other dogs and has very good recall.  On the lead she walks nicely without pulling.  She is happy to walk alongside another friendly dog.

Gaynor is ball obsessed and loves to carry the ball around in her mouth like her Labrador father.  We think she would train up as a flyball dog and she is very fast.

Gaynor is the easiest dog to live with, well behaved in the house she lies in her bed and you don't know you got her.  She barks when the doorbell goes but is not aggressive with visitors she just wants to make a fuss.  She is house trained, has a good appetite, sleeps well overnight and is happy to be left a couple of hours as long as she had a good walk and the radio left on.

Gaynor is not all that happy about travelling in the car as she is not used to it, she makes a big fuss of whining and barking and eventually is travel sick if the journey is long so we recommend travelling on an empty stomach.  The vet said she will get used to travel if repeated often short journeys to start with.

Gaynor is good to handle.  She is good to bath and groom with a brush, she wears a coat when it is cold or raining, she is happy for anyone to touch her anywhere on her body, put the lead on and off etc.

Experienced dog handler needed.

For a faithful, loyal, intelligent companion and pet Gaynor is your girl - she will be your best friend, an easy dog, who will give you loads of love.

Neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped

< Doris and Dixie

This gorgeous pair must be rehomed together.  To research why having two oldies together is a good idea click HERE

Most people want a perfect dog.  If you are one of those people read no further.  If you are special enough to be kind to an old pair who have had it tough then please open your heart with love and read the sad story of this pair.

The history and background of Doris and Dixie affects their behaviour so it is worth explaining so you get a better understanding of how they view the world and how they conduct themselves.  You just have to have a lot of  sympathy for them, it is not their fault how they behave it is the way they have been treated.

Doris and Dixie have always lived together and have lead an extremely sheltered life, having never been taken for walks, only let out in the garden.  This puts them at an appalling disadvantage.  Everything in the world is new and frightening, although their confidence is growing daily.  Their seclusion and lack of socialisation as youngsters explains why they bark and things they meet on a walk like people, dogs, traffic, bicycles etc.  It also highlights the need to for a home where they will be given patience and love and gradual exposure to things over time.

Both are ten years old and have been together all their lives and are so closely bonded.  They have little tiffs but nothing serious and they absolutely love one another so we cannot possibly split them.

They are being fostered on a small holding and when they arrived they were very nervous but every day they settle better and now confidently explore the fields off lead.  They are very loving and affectionate dogs who need a quiet, calm home with gentle kind people who have loads of patience.

They love going for walks on the moors they can be let off lead, they love running around and have good recall.and they come back home so happy after a walk no matter what the weather.

If walked in the town with people about they just get so stressed so will bark at people, bicycles and dogs and walking them is just not enjoyable.  For relaxed, happy dogs they need to walk in quiet countryside with no-one about which they really enjoy.

They wear little coats to keep them warm in the rain.

These dogs are would be too nervous to live with the noise and chaos of children they need a quiet household.

Both dogs are very loving and affectionate and love to be cuddled but as their behaviour outside is fearful they need experienced, calm, patient dog owners.

We are looking for a loving forever home with a large secure garden and quiet country walks, no children, and people who really know what they are doing with dogs.  They need to be walked where there is no traffic, not many people or dogs, just calm gentle walks three times a day and a nice garden to play in.

They DON'T demand a lot of attention and don't ask for a lot out of life and they still have many years left in them and they so deserve a second chance of a forever home.

NO CHILDREN

It will help if you have a sense of humour as they are funny little dogs that make you laugh and you have to see the funny side of their quirky nature.  We need real dog lovers, people who truly understand and have sympathy for dogs.

We have spent a lot of money on vet and groomer to get them into the best condition for rehoming.

Neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped, they have been to the vets for a full dental clean and polish with removal of any rotten teeth, and at the same time they were clipped to tidy them up by a professional dog groomer who also trimmed their nails.  They had a bath so are nice and clean.

Please do not apply unless you have many years of experience with rescue dogs who have issues

< Waffle

Waffle is a knee high Whippet cross between 5-6 years old, she is a  family pet and can live with sensible children 10 years and over who are used to dogs.   She need lots of exercise and a garden secured with a high fence as she is an active energetic dog.

Waffle is not a needy dog and is an independent girl  with a very sweet nature.  She is very dog friendly but she doesn't like boisterous dogs  harassing her and jumping all over her.

Waffle is totally obsessed with balls and loves to play fetch.  This is a good way to exercise her and give her mental stimulation.  Waffle has had a go at flyball, she came second at a fun dog show for the fastest non competitive flyball run of the day.

Waffle needs to live with another dog as she has lived with another dog all her life and if rehomed as an only dog she would suffer from Separation Anxiety.  She cannot be left for more than 4 hours.

Waddle is a super pet, a really great addition to any family of experienced dog handlers who have lots of time devoted to her.

Waffle is not good with cats.

She is well behaved in the house and doesn't chew,  she is house trained and travels well in the car.

Neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped

< Hugo

PLEASE READ ADVERT CAREFULLY BEFORE APPLYING

If you are looking for a dog with a huge character who makes you laugh so much you cry then look no further !!  This boy is full of mischief, full of fun, just a bundle of joy.  He is cheeky, self opinionated, and will try to get away with anything.  His bad behaviour will drive you to despair then he will give you a cheeky grin and you forgive him.  He will tug at your heart every day, cuddle up to you in bed to keep you warm at night and give you so much love, fulfillment and loyalty your life will never be the same again !!!  This is a 5 star, cracking little dog, you won't get one like this again.

This 2 years old terrier named Hugo is a very lively, active intelligent terrier who needs to live with another big playful dog as he suffers from anxiety when left alone.

HUGO IS A VERY AFFECTIONATE AND LOVING DOG.

Unfortunately Hugo has come from a home where he lived from a puppy with another dog who was dog aggressive so this has affected Hugo as he learned aggression from that dog.  So he sometimes barks at dogs on a lead and is sometimes anxious when meeting new dogs he doesn't know and may snap at them.  Once he knows a dog he is fine with it.  THIS IS SOMETHING THAT CAN EASILY  BE MANAGED AND TRAINED OUT IF THE OWNER IS AN EXPERIENCED DOG HANDLER IT IS NOT A BIG PROBLEM.

The foster also had Alfie P and the two dogs played together lovely.  They also lay close together on the rug in front of the fire, as you can see from the photos.  This is valuable to help Hugo learn to get on better with other dogs and also playing burns off lots of energy which Hugo needs.

Hugo can be a handful so needs a confident, experienced dog handler as he has never had any training.  He needs time, patience and loads of exercise.

Hugo is a super, kind, affectionate dog who needs a family to give him commitment and a loving forever home.  Teenage children would be fine but no younger children as he is not used to them and he is very boisterous.

He is housetrained and well mannered in the house, but he still chews so will need a lot of rawhide and toys to play with.

Hugo pulls on the lead but is gradually learning to heel, his off lead recall needs improving.

Due to his high energy and playful nature we have decided he must be rehomed with another playful kind dog.  Hugo loves Alfie P they play together really well

Competent, knowledgeable and confident dog handlers needed please.  This dog must live in the home not outside in a kennel.

  • ANOTHER BIG DOG FOR COMPANY

< BB Bobby

Bobby bites strangers due to overwhelming fear.

Apart from that this is the most affectionate dog you could possibly meet, he bonds closely with his owners and is very loyal and loving.

2 years old, good on lead, excellent recall off lead, good in the car.  Excellent with dogs, unknown with cats.  Excellent to bath and groom.

Bobby loves going for long country walks with the other dogs he is fostered with and then curls up on the sofa or in his bed by the fire and you honestly don't know you have got him.

This little dog doesn't ask for much, just a warm safe place to sleep, nice walks, another dog for company and lots of playtime and exercise.   For patient people it is not a big deal owning him, he is such a sweetheart, you just have to see things from his point of view and understand his background and fears.

The foster is now very well able to explain what triggers his fear biting, and how to handle him and manage him to keep him happy and prevent him getting scared.  If he is not scared and feels secure in his home he is a wonderful pet.  He just needs someone nice.

NO CHILDREN PLEASE

Very special kind, loving, patient owners needed for this little mite, with a lot of common sense and experienced with terriers

Neutered, microchipped,  vaccinated treated for fleas and worms, visit to the dog groomers

< Cinderella

Cinderella is seeking her very own Fairy Godmother and/or Godfather!

This super girl is a poodle cross terrier and is full of energy and joie de vivre.  She’s 10 years old and only about 14 inches at the shoulder but packs loads of personality into her small frame.

She pulls on the lead but it is not a heavy weight in your hand as she is so small.  She must wear a harness because when walked on a collar she chokes herself and will damage her neck.

Cinders can be let off lead she has good recall.

Due to being attacked by a dog in her previous home Cinders is anxious around dogs and needs carefully introducing to them, after which she will walk happily with them.  We strongly recommend that Cinders is rehomed with another kind dog because then when she goes for walks and sees other dogs her kind companion will tell her not to worry and she will be fine.  She is best off with a calm, patient, confident, experienced dog owner.  We are looking for someone who is fit and active as Cinders loves long walks.  We need someone around most of the time who can commit to walking her a couple of times per day and letting her out for frequent toilet breaks.

Cinders has a very sensitive digestive system and is eating cooked fish and boiled rice and Chappie Original tinned dog food mixed with Wainwrights cereal free hypoallergenic complete biscuit from Pets at Home..

She would suit an early retired couple who just want to spoil a dog.

In fact Cinders wants to go to the ball, and she wants to go so bad she is always trying to escape.  She needs a securely fenced garden and owners who are good at preventing her slipping out of the door to go off on her own adventure.

Do you have the glass slipper to fit her tiny feet and give her your heart and make her part of your life??

Dear little Cinders you shall go to the ball !!!!  All we need to find you a forever home.

  • NO CATS PLEASE
  • HOME WITH ANOTHER KIND DOG IS ESSENTIAL
  • EXPERIENCED DOG OWNERS
  • PREPARED TO SPOIL HER ROTTEN
