We assess the dogs in foster homes and are very honest about their behaviour, temperament and needs. Please read more on our Adoption Page

We are looking for forever homes for our dogs, so please read our dog profiles carefully. Before you contact us, please consult thoroughly with your family: you need to be certain that you can give the dog what it needs both now and for the rest of its life.

Sadly we see spiraling numbers of dogs who suffer terribly because their owners can't afford the lifelong care they need.   Keeping a dog is expensive (especially when they are ill or injured) so please do not apply for one of our dogs unless you are able to pay for it to be kept in the best of health.  We strongly suggest you take out INSURANCE to cover vets bills click HERE

WE DO NOT normally REHOME DOGS WHERE THERE ARE CATS OR CHILDREN UNDER 5 YRS.

DOGS MUST NEVER BE LEFT ALONE WITH CHILDREN.
for information about correctly managing dogs and children here are two good guides from the Kennel Club and Victoria Stilwell

The behaviour of dogs is improved using POSITIVE REWARD BASED TRAINING, FOR VIDEOS SHOWING PRACTICAL EXAMPLES CLICK HERE scroll down to see all 10

Dogs CANNOT be left alone for 8-9 hours.  SO IF YOU WORK FULL TIME we will not rehome a dog to you unless you employ a dog sitter or dog walker, and we recognise there is expense involved with providing this for the dog.  Here is a good example of a professional dog walker that we recommend in the Kirklees area DOGGYNANNY

If you are going on holiday within the next two months and cannot take a dog with you please apply for a dog on your return.  It's not fair to adopt a rescue dog that we have spent so much time and effort to settle and rehabilitate then dump it in kennels.

WE DO NOT SELL DOGS, however we ask for a Charitable donation to be provided on adoption to help towards keeping the rescue running.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT LET DOGS GO OUT "ON TRIAL". You may see the dogs as many times as you like before deciding whether or not to adopt.  Most rescue dogs have been through great stress and taking them home only to return them a short time later because owners change their minds would be cruel and damaging.  Dogs quickly form attachments and must not be returned as if they were mere objects.  So please, think very carefully and don't just take a dog on a whim.  As an adopter you should understand that it can take several weeks for a dog to settle into your home.  You must be prepared to commit to doing whatever is necessary to help your dog become a secure and happy family member. Our returns policy exists purely for those rare circumstances where a new owner is unavoidably unable to keep their new pet.

Prior to visiting our dogs you need to carefully consider a number of issues, please read before applying click HERE

< Zeus FINAL

WARNING THIS DOG HAS BEEN SEVERELY ABUSED BY A MAN

Zeus is a 4 years old Chihuahua cross Pomeranian.  He is a very kind, affectionate boy who has been severely beaten and kicked by a man prior to coming into the rescue so has a lot of fear issues.

Zeus will need an exceptionally kind, gentle, experienced owner with a lot of time for him.  He is very good with children (over 7 years please) who could be visiting children although he doesn't want to live with them full time.

Zeus is an easy dog to live with.  He is fostered with other kind dogs both large and small, and is having a great time going for long countryside walks.

Zeus loves to snuggle up on your lap to watch TV, he loves human contact and has proved he can learn to trust a love a man in the foster home but it has taken many weeks to overcome his fear.  So therefore a home with men isn't a problem if quiet, kind and gentle.

Zeus needs a coat in the cold weather as he is not keen on getting wet and cold.  And quite right too, he needs a home where he will be spoilt rotten and be number one priority for someone.

NO CATS PLEASE

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced dog owners
  • a quiet. calm environment
  • someone around most of the time
  • no children as he can't tolerate the noise and chaos, although occasional visiting children would be fine
  • no other dogs
  • three good walks each day plus supervised garden time
  • a securely fenced garden is essential
  • nearby walking places where there are no major busy roads as they don't like loud traffic
  • long term lifestyle and financial security

< Alice in Wonderland

Poor Alice fell on hard times and when she arrived into our foster care she thought all her birthdays had come true, good food, a clean warm bed, immediate vet treatment for her infected ears that were causing her such irritation and a happy terrier named Hugo to play with - Wonderland indeed !!!

Dear Alice is a West Highland White Terrier cross Parsons Terrier puppy, only about 10 months old, she is about 15 inches at the shoulder.

Alice was thrown out onto the streets to make way for the Christmas celebrations in someone's life.  She is such an easy little dog, very kind and sweet.  She is insecure and occasionally will make a quiet growl if frightened but if you just ignore her and walk away she is fine.

Alice absolutely loves cuddles and snuggling up on the sofa to watch TV.  She is a total pet and companion, a real darling dog.

Alice loves going for walks, she gets very excited, she loves to meet new dogs and plays nicely with them.

Alice is exceptionally bright and tuned in to humans, she watches you and tries so hard to please, she learn extremely quickly.

Alice is well behaved in the house, house trained, good to bath, travels well in the car and enjoys being out and about with you.  Alice loves human companionship and wants someone around most of the time.

Puppy experience is essential as puppies are very hard work.

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced, kind dog owners
  • owners experienced in kind, reward based training methods
  • another very playful active dog as a companion
  • not if both partners work full time
  • children must be dog-wise and confident and over 10 years old
  • an active home where she will get a lot of exercise

< Ernest

ERNEST THE YORKIEPOO !!!! needs a calm, quiet loving home.

Ernest is a cheeky monkey with loads of character and personality, he is hugely intelligent and works everything to his advantage !!!

Ernest is an affectionate little dog but we suspect that Confrontational techniques have been used when handling him so he has learnt to defend himself with snapping.

He gets possessive over toys and other objects and so "swap" techniques need to be used to get things from him he shouldn't have.  Confrontational techniques just don't work, tremendous patience is needed and a negotiating technique is better for him, we have proved it works.

Ernest is slightly anxious so he likes to live in a quiet and peaceful environment without loud noises.

Ernest benefits from a good quality diet, a complete dog biscuit and occasional cooked chicken and fish.

We are looking for a home that

  • experienced dog handlers who know what they are doing with dogs
  • Very calm, kind patient, owners
  • he needs to be an only pet
  • he needs 3 walks each day but doesn't need enormous amounts of exercise
  • no children
  • long term financial and lifestyle security

< Molly the Collie

Adorable Molly is a very sweet gentle girl.

Molly is 13 months old, she is a lightweight girl about 18 inches at the shoulder. She is very sweet, has an anxious personality and will therefore take time to settle into a new home.

Her fosters are kind gentle people and this is doing her a lot of good so we know what she needs in terms of handling.

Molly benefits form a quiet home with a sense of peace and calm. She has never lived with children, and is living with two kind Lurchers in foster care.

She is showing some anxiety about strange dogs and people approaching the fosters and may snap at dogs that are rude and bounce right up into her face.

We are looking for a home that

  • understands Collies and have a lot of dog handling experience
  • calm, kind patient, owners
  • she could live with another dog but this is not essential
  • she needs 3 walks each day but doesn't need enormous amounts of exercise
  • sensible teenage children who are not going to be put off by her occasional growls and snaps at strange dogs

The previous owner reported that she can be left for up to four hours but may bark occasionally when there is a noise outside that disturbs her which may annoy neighbours. However this barking is not as bad with the fosters who have dogs to keep Molly company.

This is a young dog who still needs time to mature, she will flourish and improve in a new home as she gains confidence and her anxiety decreases.  Anyone who knows dogs will understand and see the potential of a really super companion and pet.

If you know what you are doing with dogs, please consider dear Molly

< Ariel and Tinkerbell

This super pair must be rehomed together.

Very small, Ariel and Tinkerbell are Chihuahua cross Patterdale Terrier and are not much bigger than Chihuahuas.

They are very affectionate with everyone, they love children, they are very good with other dogs and get on well with each other despite that they do play fighting which is not real aggression.

They suffer a bit of Separation Anxiety so they need someone around most of the time.

They would be great on a small holding as they are good off lead and don't react to livestock.

They are CAT FRIENDLY

Give this pair a home and you will have more than enough love in your life !!!

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced, kind dog owners

  • owners experienced in kind, reward based training methods

Click below to view a video of Shiloh in training demonstrating the tremendous progress he has made

< Shiloh  !!

Needs love, patience, and proper direction and training.  He needs a kind owner who is very experienced with dogs and uses reward based training.

Shiloh is a lovely boy, an even tempered and good natured Whippet cross Boxer about 18 months old.

Shiloh is a medium / large dog (22 inches at the shoulder and weighs 24 kgs).

Shiloh has a very enthusiastic personality and is full of the joys of life. Shiloh can become excited when meeting new dogs and new people but he is not aggressive. It is when he meets news dogs that the owner must have the required experience to remain calm and use reward to maintain control and keep Shiloh calm too.

SHILOH AND HIS FOSTER HAVE BEEN UNDER THE INSTRUCTION OF A VERY EXPERIENCED DOG TRAINER AND HE IS NOW VERY OBEDIENT BUT CONTINUED STRUCTURED AND DISCIPLINED CONTROL ARE NEEDED.

With continued training and commitment from his new owner, Shiloh has the potential to be a super companion and pet as he is extremely loyal and affectionate.

Shiloh is a very quick learner who likes to please so he is very easily trained.

Shiloh arrived in the rescue with a broken tail so our vet had it docked.

Shiloh is a high energy dog who needs plenty of exercise and he loves to run off lead.   He is a strong dog but if he is walked in a "Happy at Heel" harness he hardly pulls on the lead, he walks very nicely once he has had a good run.

Shiloh is a really affectionate and even tempered dog.

Shiloh loves going for a walk; he is very loyal and will go anywhere with you.  Off lead he returns to call and will do anything for a treat.

Shiloh is good with sensible older children but is too boisterous for young children so teenagers only please.

As with all dogs adopted from this rescue we recommend control when livestock are nearby.  Shiloh must be on the lead where there are livestock.

Shiloh is dog friendly, and has been fostered with a lot of different types of dogs on a smallholding.  Shiloh can live with a dog of similar size and play style as he may be too energetic for smaller dogs.

Shiloh is well behaved in the house, sleeps well, eats well, travels well in the car and is a good boy.

This intelligent, loyal dog is a wonderful companion and pet.   Please consider him, he will be your forever best friend.

We are looking for a home with

  • lots of attention and love
  • experienced, kind dog owners
  • owners experienced in kind, reward based training methods
  • not if both partners work full time
  • children must be over 15 years old, dog-wise and confident as he can be boisterous

< Pebbles

Pebbles is a very sweet affectionate little girl about 8 years old according to the vet.  Poor girl arrived thin and stressed but she is so kind and affectionate and loves children.

Pebbles gets on with most dogs but would prefer to live as an only dog as she gets stressed over toys and food.  She is currently fostered with a steady, kind older Chihuahua and a very experienced foster and there are no problems between the two dogs.

Pebbles walks nicely on the lead and enjoys going for walks.

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced dog owners

< Choco

Choco is an 8 years old Lhasa Apso with a huge personality.  He is a beautiful red champagne colour with a black mask.

Choco has a sense of humour and loves to have fun playing with his toys, he makes you laugh.  He enjoys going for long walks and likes to bury his head in the snow.  Then he will come home and curl up in his bed in front of the fire.

Choco is very well behaved in the house and is house trained.  He travels well in the car.

Choco doesn't like being picked up.

Choco has a stubborn side and will growl to get his own way, we has occasionally been known to snap.  Therefore kind, calm, experienced dog handlers are needed.  The foster has no problem managing this dog, he doesn't confront Choco or argue with him, he simply negotiates to get Choco to do as he is told by making it fun and giving treats as a reward when he does the right thing.  In a few days of coming into foster Choco is already happier and showing less bad behaviour so we think it is new dog nerves.

Choco is dog friendly and is fostered with a Border Collie.

NO CHILDREN PLEASE however occasional visiting dog-wise teenage children would be fine.

 NO CATS PLEASE

Choco will need regular visits to the groomers.

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced dog owners
  • a quiet. calm environment

Click below to view a video of Valentino with her doggie friends in the woods

< Valentino

Valentino is a 2 years old Cocker Spaniel who is very affectionate, intelligent and active.

She is a strong character with stubborn tendencies so experienced owners are needed who understand reward based training as she will do anything for a tasty treat.

She is not suitable to live with children due to her stubborn nature although visiting children over 10 years would be fine.  She is still "puppy mouthing" so takes your hand into her mouth when she is playing or excited, which needs training out of her.  Spreading lemon juice on your hand is a good deterrent !!!!

Valentino currently lives with another submissive dog but she may sometimes become possessive over toys so she should be the only dog in the household.   .

As the video shows, when Valentino is out and about with dogs she knows she is very calm and sociable and loves the company of dogs on a walk.  However sometimes finds larger unfamiliar dogs intimidating and so can be quite vocal barking at them until she knows they are no threat

Strong on the lead, brilliant off lead, she has a high prey drive so will chase animals and will need to be controlled in areas where there are livestock.

Valentino would excel at obedience trials or dog agility so you can have a lot of fun with her.  She is a loyal dog with a lot of love to give.

NO CATS PLEASE

< Lucy

Adorable small young whippet girl about 2 years old named Lucy with a lovely kind, gentle nature.  She is very affectionate and really good with children.

Lucy is very good with other dogs once she knows them.  She is NOT dog aggressive but barks at strange dogs when she is on the lead due to fear.  She sees a dog and jumps and pulls very hard and barks therefore we need an experienced owner and no children as this behaviour would frighten kids.

Lucy needs a country home where it is quiet and peaceful.  She really doesn't like road walking, busy/noisy places, traffic etc

  •  experienced, kind dog owners
  • owners experienced in kind, reward based training methods
  • another very playful active dog as a companion

 < Pip Squeak

Dear little Pip Squeak is 4 years old and has led a very sheltered life being mostly in the house and garden.

Pip Squeak hasn't had much experience of children, just occasional visitors in their early teens.  He is well behaved as long as children don't handle him and try to pick him up.

Pip Squeak needs 4 walks a day about 20 minutes each walk plus he enjoys time in the garden.  He is clean and well behaved in the house, can be left alone for up to four hours without barking or chewing.

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced dog owners
  • someone around most of the time to give him a lot of attention and love
  • a quiet and peaceful home without children but occasional visiting children would be OK as long as they respect dogs and are well behaved
  • regular exercise and good quality food
  • patience with his insecurities around meeting new dogs and people

< Teddy

EXCEPTIONALLY PATIENT, KIND OWNERS NEEDED

SMALL HOLDING OR FARM REQUIRED

Teddy is a very loving and affectionate dog who has fear issues.  He loves to snuggle up on the sofa next to you to watch TV and sleep with you on the bed at night.

Teddy needs mature experienced owners.

Teddy has been badly treated in the past so is sometimes snappy if he is handled in a bossy and confrontational manner as this makes him scared and he gets into self defence mode.  You cannot tell him off this really upsets him, instead you have to negotiate with him and persuade him to do what you want.

Teddy needs you to be very patient with him.  So if you are always rushing off somewhere and need to rush putting his lead on or moving him between rooms then your speed will scare him and he will freeze and refuse to move.

Teddy is good on the lead and needs walks about 30 minutes each.

Teddy is good with other dogs but needs to be the only dog in the home or he could be rehomed with a kind, steady dog.  Teddy sometimes gets jealous when the owner fusses another dog and he will growl.

Please note if he is handled badly Teddy will snap.

NO CATS PLEASE

We are looking for a home with

  • a quiet, countryside location he is fostered on a small holding and is no problem at all.
  • lots of attention and love
  • experienced, kind dog owners
  • an ability to train a dog using reward based methods
  • NOT if both partners work full time
  • NO CHILDREN OR FREQUENTLY VISITING CHILDREN
  • an active home where he will get a lot of exercise
  • secure fenced garden with minimum of 4 foot fence is essential
  • long term lifestyle and financial security

< Amelia

This dog is with "Barnsley and District Animal Welfare" click HERE for details of this rescue

Hi my name is Amelia.

I have been picked up as a stray so my background isn’t known but I am a medium to large young cross breed who has some big ears! It’s possible I am Shar Pei cross but who knows with us Heinz 57 dogs.

I am very friendly with everyone and I am also very focused and smart for my young age.  In my last home it would seem that I have been trained as I will sit and swop both paws over and I can also lay down.  I am obedient as well as pretty but still unfortunately for me I still have no home of my own.

I am currently keeping all paws crossed that someone out there may just glance my way and see my pics of me laying down and being a good girl.

I have been ok around other dogs and would love to go for some walks very soon as I have lots of energy to burn.  I am approx 18 months old and need a home with people who love some outside adventures and have the time to show me how to be happy and just how fun life can be when you are a wanted and loved dog.

Can you give me the home I deserve this time?

This dog is at Oakenshaw kennels click HERE  for opening times and to arrange a viewing
