We assess the dogs in foster homes and are very honest about their behaviour, temperament and needs. Please read more on our Adoption Page

We are looking for forever homes for our dogs, so please read our dog profiles carefully. Before you contact us, please consult thoroughly with your family: you need to be certain that you can give the dog what it needs both now and for the rest of its life.

Sadly we see spiraling numbers of dogs who suffer terribly because their owners can't afford the lifelong care they need.   Keeping a dog is expensive (especially when they are ill or injured) so please do not apply for one of our dogs unless you are able to pay for it to be kept in the best of health.  We strongly suggest you take out INSURANCE to cover vets bills click HERE

WE DO NOT normally REHOME DOGS WHERE THERE ARE CATS OR CHILDREN UNDER 5 YRS.

DOGS MUST NEVER BE LEFT ALONE WITH CHILDREN.
for information about correctly managing dogs and children here are two good guides from the Kennel Club and Victoria Stilwell

The behaviour of dogs is improved using POSITIVE REWARD BASED TRAINING, FOR VIDEOS SHOWING PRACTICAL EXAMPLES CLICK HERE scroll down to see all 10

Dogs CANNOT be left alone for 8-9 hours.  SO IF YOU WORK FULL TIME we will not rehome a dog to you unless you employ a dog sitter or dog walker, and we recognise there is expense involved with providing this for the dog.  Here is a good example of a professional dog walker that we recommend in the Kirklees area DOGGYNANNY

If you are going on holiday within the next two months and cannot take a dog with you please apply for a dog on your return.  It's not fair to adopt a rescue dog that we have spent so much time and effort to settle and rehabilitate then dump it in kennels.

WE DO NOT SELL DOGS, however we ask for a Charitable donation to be provided on adoption to help towards keeping the rescue running.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT LET DOGS GO OUT "ON TRIAL". You may see the dogs as many times as you like before deciding whether or not to adopt.  Most rescue dogs have been through great stress and taking them home only to return them a short time later because owners change their minds would be cruel and damaging.  Dogs quickly form attachments and must not be returned as if they were mere objects.  So please, think very carefully and don't just take a dog on a whim.  As an adopter you should understand that it can take several weeks for a dog to settle into your home.  You must be prepared to commit to doing whatever is necessary to help your dog become a secure and happy family member. Our returns policy exists purely for those rare circumstances where a new owner is unavoidably unable to keep their new pet.

Prior to visiting our dogs you need to carefully consider a number of issues, please read before applying click HERE

< Zeus

WARNING THIS DOG HAS BEEN SEVERELY ABUSED BY A MAN

Zeus is a 4 years old Chihuahua cross Pomeranian.  He is a very kind, affectionate boy who has been severely beaten and kicked by a man prior to coming into the rescue so has a lot of fear issues.

Zeus will need an exceptionally kind, gentle, experienced owner with a lot of time for him.  He is very good with children (over 7 years please) who could be visiting children although he doesn't want to live with them full time.

Zeus is an easy dog to live with.  He is fostered with other kind dogs both large and small, and is having a great time going for long countryside walks.

Zeus loves to snuggle up on your lap to watch TV, he loves human contact and has proved he can learn to trust a love a man in the foster home but it has taken many weeks to overcome his fear.  So therefore a home with men isn't a problem if quiet, kind and gentle.

Zeus needs a coat in the cold weather as he is not keen on getting wet and cold.  And quite right too, he needs a home where he will be spoilt rotten and be number one priority for someone.

NO CATS PLEASE

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced dog owners
  • a quiet. calm environment
  • someone around most of the time
  • no children as he can't tolerate the noise and chaos, although occasional visiting children would be fine
  • three good walks each day plus supervised garden time
  • a securely fenced garden is essential
  • nearby walking places where there are no major busy roads as they don't like loud traffic
  • long term lifestyle and financial security

< Sally

Sally is a very affectionate 8 years old rough coat terrier who needs a quiet countryside home where she can get 3 medium length walks a day without meeting too many other dogs as she is very anxious around new dogs

The foster is a very experienced dog handler and has deliberately not advertised Sally when she arrived in the rescue.  Sally has had several months running round the small holding getting socialised with a lot of different dogs and her attitude and behaviour with dogs is now much improved.  However the advice to most people would be to walk Sally away from dogs and gradually introduce her to dogs she will meet on a regular basis as she can be very friendly with dogs she knows.

Sally needs companionship and love, good quality food and is not a dog who will need a lot of exercise.

Terriers are a long lived breed and can go on into their late teens.

Sally travels well in the car, is quiet and well behaved in the house although she will let you know if someone is at the door, she sleeps well at night and doesn't cause any trouble.  She likes a warm coat in cold weather.

Sally needs to be let out every 4 hours to go to the toilet so wouldn't suit a full time worker

We are looking for a home with

  • a quiet country location where she won't meet a lot of dogs
  • owners looking for a companion and pet who will spoil her rotten
  • 3 medium length walks a day
  • a nice sized well fenced garden
  • long term lifestyle and financial security

Neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms.

< Brucie

NEEDS A LOT OF EXERCISE

This is a SMALL dog about 14 inches at the shoulder very lightweight build.

Brucie is an 18 months old Pomeranian cross Chihuahua with a very sweet nature.  This is a bouncy, happy dog who is a joy to own. HE MUST LIVE WITH ANOTHER YOUNG, ACTIVE, PLAYFUL DOG THAT GETS A LOT OF WALKS.

Brucie is a very affectionate boy who needs a lot of attention and love.

Brucie is very fit with a lot of muscle built up by walking long distances with the foster.  He needs a lot of exercise, (he is currently out for 7 walks a day with the foster) and could easily walk the Pennine Way.  Please don't apply if you are lazy.

Brucie has been terrorised by children in the past so older teenagers would suit him best as he may snap when afraid of little ones who approach him.

Brucie is clean in the house if he gets enough walks, he travels well in the car and loves going to new places.  He walks nicely on lead and is good off lead.

Brucie is very good and sociable with other dogs, he can live with other dogs of all types and sizes and is not food aggressive or toy aggressive, he plays lovely with young dogs like himself.

Brucie still needs a lot of training and loves food so will do anything for a treat.  However he is a sensitive soul who is mortified if he is told off so positive, reward based training is needed as he doesn't learn anything if he is scared.

We are looking for a home with

  • owners with a lot of dog handling experience
  • calm, kind patient, owners
  • cannot be left for more than 3 hours
  • he needs to live with another dog
  • he needs at least 3 good walks each day and needs a lot of of exercise
  • sensible teenage children

Neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms.

< Milton

Milton is a 9 years old Shih Tzu.  He is a wonderful dog but has socialisation and fear issues with dogs and people.  We need owners who know what they are doing with dogs to help him and improve him.

Milton is settling in very well with his foster after a just a couple of weeks and is showing great progress. He is beginning to feel more confident in his surroundings and has started to accept strangers, even letting them stroke him.

Milton is not an aggressive dog but he is insecure and afraid of larger dogs.  He has started to socialise well with other small dogs of both sexes.  While on the lead he can show aggressive behaviour towards other dogs, but he is learning to stay calm by using various techniques such as simple separation by walking between him and the other dog.

So Milton needs to be an only dog in the household.

He needs an experienced, patient home who will continue with his training.

Milton enjoys walks and is a medium level of exercise dog.  He is getting used to longer walks, has met ponies and has learnt that they don't hold any threat, so stays calm when he meets them. He would need to be introduced to other live stock carefully, so that he can learn to be at ease near them.

He has proved he is an adaptable dog who will learn fast and enjoys going to new places. The foster takes him into a fully fenced field and lets him off lead so he can run round and have fun. He keeps the foster in sight, but at the moment isn't showing instant recall.  This will improve with treats every time he comes back.

On arrival in this rescue Milton was not happy with strangers and would growl if anyone tried to stroke him. However after a relatively short time in foster he has coped with 10 people visiting for a dinner party and as long as they just let him come to them, he introduced himself to everyone and let them stroke him.

Milton is still a bit anxious and may growl if someone walks past him and scares him.

Milton has really bonded with his foster family proving he enjoys human company and can be left a few hours but gets miserable if left alone for long periods. He is a loving little lad and needs to form a strong bond with his new family.

Milton is gradually gaining confidence and has really improved since his arrival, he is a lovely companion and pet.

Milton sleeps on the foster's bed at night and this is really helping improve his happiness and confidence and he is so well behaved it isn't a problem.

Milton is fully house trained.

This is an adorable dog in the right home environment with the right owners.

Update from the foster 21 April

Absolutely thrilled! Just got back from our walk & Milton walked calmly past 4 different dogs. All large breeds as well, whoop yeh!  We did get through a truck load of treats & had to do several about turns, walk away, sit, & then try again, but it actually worked!  I'm sure we can do it again, but I'm prepared to be patient! I'm just so happy right now & mega proud of him, thought it was going to take months, not weeks! xxxxx

I know it's only the 1st step, but it does show that he will do great with an experienced, patient handler.

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced confident owners who aren't going to be alarmed by occasional growling for the first few months
  • great patience is needed as he may take months to feel fully settled and relaxed
  • knowledge of reward based training methods
  • no young children, older teenagers with lots of dog experience would be OK
  • not left for long periods
  • large securely fenced garden
  • not left for long hours alone
  • long term lifestyle stability
  • long term financial security

Must be rehomed within 50 miles of West Yorkshire.

< Jude

NEEDS A LOT OF EXERCISE

Jude is a fabulous 3 years old Standard sized Chihuahua who is very affectionate.

Jude has come from an abusive past, he has been passed around half a dozen homes via the Gumtree website like a piece of disposable rubbish until in the end he became so stressed he snapped at someone and was going to be put to sleep.

This gorgeous dog doesn't deserve this horrendous abuse, he is such a sweet boy, very obedient and is a lovely dog to own.

Jude is dog friendly although he does bark at some dogs but most dogs ignore him as he is so small.

Jude is good on the lead, off the lead, in the car, in the house, sleeps well, eats well, loves going with you wherever you go.

Jude just needs someone to give him another chance of a good life.

We are looking for a home that

  • has a lot of dog handling experience
  • calm, kind patient, owners
  • he MUST live with another dog
  • he needs 3 walks each day and needs a lot of of exercise
  • sensible teenage children

< Molly

NEEDS A LOT OF EXERCISE

Adorable Molly is a very sweet gentle girl who we believe is a Collie cross Saluki with a lot of behavioural tendencies for both breeds

Molly is 13 months old, she is a lightweight girl about 18 inches at the shoulder. She is very sweet, has an anxious personality and will therefore take time to settle into a new home.

Her fosters are kind gentle people and this is doing her a lot of good so we know what she needs in terms of handling.

Molly benefits form a quiet home with a sense of peace and calm. She has never lived with children, and is living with two kind Lurchers in foster care.

She is showing some anxiety about strange dogs and people approaching the fosters and may snap at dogs that are rude and bounce right up into her face.

Molly is anxious about visitors to the house especially when they get up to leave.

Molly travels well in the car.

We are looking for a home that

  • understands Collies and have a lot of dog handling experience
  • calm, kind patient, owners
  • she MUST live with another dog
  • she needs 3 walks each day and needs a lot of of exercise
  • sensible older teenage children

The previous owner reported that she can be left for up to four hours but may bark occasionally when there is a noise outside that disturbs her which may annoy neighbours. However this barking is not as bad with the fosters who have dogs to keep Molly company.

This is a young dog who still needs time to mature, she will flourish and improve in a new home as she gains confidence and her anxiety decreases.  Anyone who knows dogs will understand and see the potential of a really super companion and pet.

If you know what you are doing with dogs, please consider dear Molly

Choco is an 8 years old Shih Tzu with a huge personality.  He is a beautiful red champagne colour with a black mask.

Choco has a sense of humour and loves to have fun playing with his toys, he makes you laugh.  He enjoys going for long walks and likes to bury his head in the snow.  Then he will come home and curl up in his bed in front of the fire.

Choco is very well behaved in the house and is house trained.  He travels well in the car.

Choco doesn't like being picked up.

Choco has a stubborn side and will growl to get his own way, we has occasionally been known to snap.  Therefore kind, calm, experienced dog handlers are needed.  The foster has no problem managing this dog, he doesn't confront Choco or argue with him, he simply negotiates to get Choco to do as he is told by making it fun and giving treats as a reward when he does the right thing.  Choco is already happier and showing less bad behaviour so he is demonstrating that with correct handling he is a happier well behaved dog.

< Teddy

EXCEPTIONALLY PATIENT, KIND OWNERS NEEDED

SMALL HOLDING OR FARM REQUIRED

Teddy is a very loving and affectionate dog who has fear issues.  He loves to snuggle up on the sofa next to you to watch TV and sleep with you on the bed at night.

Teddy needs mature experienced owners.

Teddy has been badly treated in the past so is sometimes snappy if he is handled in a bossy and confrontational manner as this makes him scared and he gets into self defence mode.  You cannot tell him off this really upsets him, instead you have to negotiate with him and persuade him to do what you want.

Teddy needs you to be very patient with him.  So if you are always rushing off somewhere and need to rush putting his lead on or moving him between rooms then your speed will scare him and he will freeze and refuse to move.

Teddy is good on the lead and needs walks about 30 minutes each.

Teddy is good with other dogs but needs to be the only dog in the home or he could be rehomed with a kind, steady dog.  Teddy sometimes gets jealous when the owner fusses another dog and he will growl.

Please note if he is handled badly Teddy will snap.

NO CATS PLEASE

We are looking for a home with

  • a quiet, countryside location he is fostered on a small holding and is no problem at all.
  • lots of attention and love
  • experienced, kind dog owners
  • an ability to train a dog using reward based methods

< Amelia

This dog is with "Barnsley and District Animal Welfare" click HERE for details of this rescue

Hi my name is Amelia.

I have been picked up as a stray so my background isn’t known but I am a medium to large young cross breed who has some big ears! It’s possible I am Shar Pei cross but who knows with us Heinz 57 dogs.

I am very friendly with everyone and I am also very focused and smart for my young age.  In my last home it would seem that I have been trained as I will sit and swop both paws over and I can also lay down.  I am obedient as well as pretty but still unfortunately for me I still have no home of my own.

I am currently keeping all paws crossed that someone out there may just glance my way and see my pics of me laying down and being a good girl.

I have been ok around other dogs and would love to go for some walks very soon as I have lots of energy to burn.  I am approx 18 months old and need a home with people who love some outside adventures and have the time to show me how to be happy and just how fun life can be when you are a wanted and loved dog.

Can you give me the home I deserve this time?
