We assess the dogs in foster homes and are very honest about their behaviour, temperament and needs. Please read more on our Adoption Page

We are looking for forever homes for our dogs, so please read our dog profiles carefully. Before you contact us, please consult thoroughly with your family: you need to be certain that you can give the dog what it needs both now and for the rest of its life.

Sadly we see spiraling numbers of dogs who suffer terribly because their owners can't afford the lifelong care they need.   Keeping a dog is expensive (especially when they are ill or injured) so please do not apply for one of our dogs unless you are able to pay for it to be kept in the best of health.  We strongly suggest you take out INSURANCE to cover vets bills click HERE

WE DO NOT normally REHOME DOGS WHERE THERE ARE CATS OR CHILDREN UNDER 5 YRS.

DOGS MUST NEVER BE LEFT ALONE WITH CHILDREN.
for information about correctly managing dogs and children here are two good guides from the Kennel Club and Victoria Stilwell

The behaviour of dogs is improved using POSITIVE REWARD BASED TRAINING, FOR VIDEOS SHOWING PRACTICAL EXAMPLES CLICK HERE scroll down to see all 10

Dogs CANNOT be left alone for 8-9 hours.  SO IF YOU WORK FULL TIME we will not rehome a dog to you unless you employ a dog sitter or dog walker, and we recognise there is expense involved with providing this for the dog.  Here is a good example of a professional dog walker that we recommend in the Kirklees area DOGGYNANNY

If you are going on holiday within the next two months and cannot take a dog with you please apply for a dog on your return.  It's not fair to adopt a rescue dog that we have spent so much time and effort to settle and rehabilitate then dump it in kennels.

WE DO NOT SELL DOGS, however we ask for a Charitable donation to be provided on adoption to help towards keeping the rescue running.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT LET DOGS GO OUT "ON TRIAL". You may see the dogs as many times as you like before deciding whether or not to adopt.  Most rescue dogs have been through great stress and taking them home only to return them a short time later because owners change their minds would be cruel and damaging.  Dogs quickly form attachments and must not be returned as if they were mere objects.  So please, think very carefully and don't just take a dog on a whim.  As an adopter you should understand that it can take several weeks for a dog to settle into your home.  You must be prepared to commit to doing whatever is necessary to help your dog become a secure and happy family member. Our returns policy exists purely for those rare circumstances where a new owner is unavoidably unable to keep their new pet.

Prior to visiting our dogs you need to carefully consider a number of issues, please read before applying click HERE

< Dexter

PLEASE TAKE AN HONEST LOOK AT YOUR LIFESTYLE AND COMMITMENTS AND DEMANDS ON YOUR TIME BEFORE APPLYING AS DEXTER NEEDS A LOT OF TIME AND ATTENTION.  Can you really find the time to look after this dog if you work and have young children to look after??

Dexter is a 12 month old Collie who has had no training of any sort apart from being fully house trained, however it's only taken him a few days to settle with the foster and start to learn. He has seen very little of the world so he's quite immature for his age and as a result he is extremely giddy and to the inexperienced owner he would be hard work. He pulls like a train on the lead but off lead recall is excellent.

Dexter has a completely reliable, kind and wonderful nature. He is good with other dogs and just wants to play. He shows no interest in the foster's horses, doesn't chase cars, bikes or joggers. He loves everyone so much and just wants to jump up and greet everybody.

He is extremely clever and quick to learn and is totally toy obsessed so we feel he could do with a job such as flyball or agility. Not forgetting his ability to open doors when they have lever handles , though my fire door baffles him because it's too heavy for him

He's a very affectionate dog and loves been around people and is interested in absolutely anything you are doing. With a bit of time and training he will make an amazingly loyal dog for the right person.

He loves to travel wherever you are going, but does get giddy barking at whatever he is interested in. The foster takes him on lots of car trips so he is getting steadier as time goes by.

Dexter can be left with no problems other than puppy chewing so needs to be provided with rawhide chews. At bedtime may cry for a couple of minutes then just settles downstairs with not a sound till the morning. He also eats well and has no food aggression, he is currently eating in a room with 5 other foster dogs.

In all he's a beautiful boy who is a must for the genuine Collie enthusiast. All he needs now is correct guidance to point him in the right direction and he will just be an ace companion to have a bit of fun with at some competitions.

We are looking for a home with

  • someone who knows what they are doing with Collies
  • children over 12 years
  • long term financial and lifestyle stability
  • preference will be given to people who have owned Collies previously and are fully geared up to give them the mental stimulation and exercise needed

< Hattie

WAKE UP EVERYONE - this is the dog you have waited for all your life. What a wonderful girl she is, loving, loyal, intelligent, loves everyone she meets and is dog friendly.

Hattie would love to live with another dog and be taken long walks.

She is a super, knee high dog who can pull strongly on the lead so would need to be walked in a "Happy at Heel" harness by Ancol obtained from Amazon. Fantastic off lead, gets over excited at the beginning of a walk but soon settles.

Hattie is fostered with dogs of all shapes and sizes she is no trouble at all.

She is slightly overweight but that is soon put right with enough exercise. She's only four years old but acts like a puppy.

You will go a long way to find such a nice dog as this one.

We are looking for a home with

< Mischief

MATURE EXPERIENCED OWNERS NEEDED, NO CHILDREN

This poor puppy has been passed from pillar to post through the internet selling sites and this unstable and insecure past has had a huge impact on him.  Therefore he needs kind owners with a lot of patience, a routine and a lot of exercise and socialisation.

Mischief is a very small boy, he is a Chihuahua cross Yorkshire Terrier puppy about 9 months old and has a huge personality and character.

He is very affectionate with humans but very anxious when strangers come to the house and will nip.

Mischief is very friendly with dogs he lives with and when out and about off lead, but needs careful introduction to people and dogs when on the lead because being on lead makes him feel constrained and anxious.

In the right home Mischief will make a super companion and pet.

We are looking for a home with

  • someone around most of the time
  • a similar sized friendly playful dog as a companion for Mischief
  •  very securely fenced garden and owners with their wits about them as he will escape and run away
  • no children
  • an ability to train a dog using reward based methods
  • not if both partners work full time
  • long term financial and lifestyle stability

< Ted

Ted is a wonderful 11 months Parsons Terrier who is a fantastic family pet for children over 10 years old.  He previously lived with a 3 years old child but proved too boisterous for that child to cope with.

As a typical puppy he is very active and boisterous so children would need to be very experienced with dogs and not afraid.  Ted may accidentally knock a child over but has no aggression and would never hurt a child.

Ted needs a lot of exercise and training.  Ted is fostered on a small holding with 15 dogs and he is proving he is good with other dogs but lacks social skills so bounces right into their face and leaps all over them.  He is learning very quickly that this is bad manners and is getting much better behaved.

Ted is exceptionally intelligent and needs a lot of stimulation

Ted is just a great pup who gives a lot of love.

Ted is clean in the house, sleeps well overnight (currently on the foster's bed).  He travels well in the car but whines a bit then settles down.  He pulls on the lead but is good off lead with variable recall so needs training.

Ted suffers from Separation Anxiety so needs a home with someone around all the time and another dog.

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced dog handlers who know about reward based training methods
  • another playful dog
  • plenty of exercise and attention
  • securely fenced garden
  • not if both partners work
  • children over 10 years

< Lucy

NEEDS A LOT OF EXERCISE AND ANOTHER DOG

Adorable small young whippet girl about 2 years old named Lucy with a lovely kind, gentle nature.  She is very affectionate and really good with children.

Lucy is very good with other dogs once she knows them.  She is NOT dog aggressive but barks at strange dogs when she is on the lead due to fear.  She sees a dog and jumps and pulls very hard and barks therefore we need an experienced owner and no children as this behaviour would frighten kids.

Lucy needs a country home where it is quiet and peaceful.  She really doesn't like road walking, busy/noisy places, traffic etc

Lucy is good off lead in a fenced field, she loves to run and will come back when called once she has had a run.  She enjoys playing ball and running with it in her mouth.

Lucy is house trained, she likes to snuggle up on the sofa.

< Whisky

EXTREMELY EXPERIENCED, CONFIDENT DOG HANDLER NEEDED FOR THIS DOG

Whiskey is a German Spitz Mittell 8 years old

Whiskey is a fabulous very friendly dog who is a joy to live with.  He doesn't bark or make any trouble when left alone a couple of hours.  He eats well and sleeps well and is very good condition.  He is good on and off the lead, house trained, travels well in the car.  He has a very happy personality and is always laughing and smiling.  He appreciates everything you do for him and is so grateful for a bit of love.

Whiskey bonds very closely to humans, he really looks you in the eye and tells you he loves you.

Whiskey is a very kind and affectionate dog.

He lacks social skills with other dogs but doesn't  fight or bite he just rushes into the dog's face.  He will bark at big dogs.  Some dogs dislike this approach and get upset.  He is being fostered on a small holding with a lot of other dogs and his dog social skills are improving all the time.

Whiskey needs to be handled gently as he can get nervous for example if you look into his mouth or try to groom him.  Therefore although he is very kind and affectionate he wouldn't suit children although occasional visiting children would be fine.

Whiskey can live with another kind dog who is very dog friendly, in fact it would be very beneficial for him as it would help improve his skills with dogs and gain his confidence.

Whiskey is a gorgeous, very affectionate companion and pet and will be a wonderful dog in the right hands.

We are looking for a home with

  • a countryside home with access to long walks
  • lots of attention and love
  • someone around most of the time
  • experienced, kind dog owners
  • an ability to train a dog using reward based methods
  • not if both partners work full time
  • no children but sensible older teenagers would be fine if they are very experienced with dogs

< Dylan

COMMITTED OWNERS WHO CAN GIVE DYLAN A LOT OF TIME AND ATTENTION AND ANOTHER DOG TO PLAY WITH

Please read this advert carefully and don't apply unless you can give Dylan what he needs.  He hasn't had the best start prior to coming into rescue and now needs a very special, kind, loving home.

Dylan is a small dog about 15 inches at the shoulder. He is a 4 years old Patterdale Terrier cross who is a very sweet, sensitive boy so needs kind and patient handling as he gets very upset if he thinks people are cross with him.

He is friendly with adults and children and loves other dogs.

Exceptionally intelligent, Dylan is very easily trainable with food reward. He loves to play fetch with a ball and will play for hours on end which is a great way to exercise him especially running up and down a slope.

Dylan needs company so another dog is essential, and someone around most of the time. He came from a home where he never got the time and attention he needs so we need to find a better home with owners who will treasure him and put him first.

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced dog handlers who can give Dylan a lot of time and attention and exercise
  • another playful, kind dog
  • children over 10 years old
  • long term financial and lifestyle security

You will be rewarded with a wonderful dog who is a loyal family pet

< Sally

Sally is a very affectionate 8 years old rough coat terrier who needs a quiet countryside home where she can get 3 medium length walks a day without meeting too many other dogs as she is very anxious around new dogs

The foster is a very experienced dog handler and has deliberately not advertised Sally when she arrived in the rescue.  Sally has had several months running round the small holding getting socialised with a lot of different dogs and her attitude and behaviour with dogs is now much improved.  However the advice to most people would be to walk Sally away from dogs and gradually introduce her to dogs she will meet on a regular basis as she can be very friendly with dogs she knows.

Sally needs companionship and love, good quality food and is not a dog who will need a lot of exercise.

Terriers are a long lived breed and can go on into their late teens.

Sally travels well in the car, is quiet and well behaved in the house although she will let you know if someone is at the door, she sleeps well at night and doesn't cause any trouble.  She likes a warm coat in cold weather.

Sally needs to be let out every 4 hours to go to the toilet so wouldn't suit a full time worker

We are looking for a home with

  • a quiet country location where she won't meet a lot of dogs
  • owners looking for a companion and pet who will spoil her rotten
  • 3 medium length walks a day
  • a nice sized well fenced garden
  • long term lifestyle and financial security

< Brucie

NEEDS A LOT OF EXERCISE AND ATTENTION

This is a SMALL dog about 14 inches at the shoulder very lightweight build.

Brucie is an 18 months old Pomeranian cross Chihuahua with a very sweet nature.  This is a bouncy, happy dog who is a joy to own. HE MUST LIVE WITH ANOTHER YOUNG, ACTIVE, PLAYFUL DOG THAT GETS A LOT OF WALKS.

Brucie is a very affectionate boy who needs a lot of attention and love.

Brucie is very fit with a lot of muscle built up by walking long distances with the foster.  He needs a lot of exercise, (he is currently out for 7 walks a day with the foster) and could easily walk the Pennine Way.  Please don't apply if you are lazy.

Brucie has been terrorised by children in the past so older teenagers would suit him best as he may snap when afraid of little ones who approach him.

Brucie is clean in the house if he gets enough walks, he travels well in the car and loves going to new places.  He walks nicely on lead and is good off lead.

Brucie is very good and sociable with other dogs, he can live with other dogs of all types and sizes and is not food aggressive or toy aggressive, he plays lovely with young dogs like himself.

Brucie still needs a lot of training and loves food so will do anything for a treat.  However he is a sensitive soul who is mortified if he is told off so positive, reward based training is needed as he doesn't learn anything if he is scared.

We are looking for a home with

  • owners with a lot of dog handling experience
  • calm, kind patient, owners
  • cannot be left for more than 3 hours
  • he needs to live with another dog
  • he needs at least 3 good walks each day and needs a lot of of exercise

< Milton

Milton is a 9 years old Shih Tzu.  He is a wonderful dog but has socialisation and fear issues with dogs and people.  We need owners who know what they are doing with dogs to help him and improve him.

Milton is settling in very well with his foster after a just a couple of weeks and is showing great progress. He is beginning to feel more confident in his surroundings and has started to accept strangers, even letting them stroke him.

Milton is not an aggressive dog but he is insecure and afraid of larger dogs.  He has started to socialise well with other small dogs of both sexes.  While on the lead he can show aggressive behaviour towards other dogs, but he is learning to stay calm by using various techniques such as simple separation by walking between him and the other dog.

So Milton needs to be an only dog in the household.

He needs an experienced, patient home who will continue with his training.

Milton enjoys walks and is a medium level of exercise dog.  He is getting used to longer walks, has met ponies and has learnt that they don't hold any threat, so stays calm when he meets them. He would need to be introduced to other live stock carefully, so that he can learn to be at ease near them.

He has proved he is an adaptable dog who will learn fast and enjoys going to new places. The foster takes him into a fully fenced field and lets him off lead so he can run round and have fun. He keeps the foster in sight, but at the moment isn't showing instant recall.  This will improve with treats every time he comes back.

On arrival in this rescue Milton was not happy with strangers and would growl if anyone tried to stroke him. However after a relatively short time in foster he has coped with 10 people visiting for a dinner party and as long as they just let him come to them, he introduced himself to everyone and let them stroke him.

Milton is still a bit anxious and may growl if someone walks past him and scares him.

Milton has really bonded with his foster family proving he enjoys human company and can be left a few hours but gets miserable if left alone for long periods. He is a loving little lad and needs to form a strong bond with his new family.

Milton is gradually gaining confidence and has really improved since his arrival, he is a lovely companion and pet.

Milton sleeps on the foster's bed at night and this is really helping improve his happiness and confidence and he is so well behaved it isn't a problem.

Milton is fully house trained.

This is an adorable dog in the right home environment with the right owners.

Update from the foster 21 April

Absolutely thrilled! Just got back from our walk & Milton walked calmly past 4 different dogs. All large breeds as well, whoop yeh!  We did get through a truck load of treats & had to do several about turns, walk away, sit, & then try again, but it actually worked!  I'm sure we can do it again, but I'm prepared to be patient! I'm just so happy right now & mega proud of him, thought it was going to take months, not weeks! xxxxx

I know it's only the 1st step, but it does show that he will do great with an experienced, patient handler.

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced confident owners who aren't going to be alarmed by occasional growling for the first few months
  • great patience is needed as he may take months to feel fully settled and relaxed
  • knowledge of reward based training methods
  • no young children, older teenagers with lots of dog experience would be OK
  • not left for long periods
  • large securely fenced garden
  • not left for long hours alone
  • long term lifestyle stability
  • long term financial security

Must be rehomed within 50 miles of West Yorkshire.

< Amelia

This dog is with "Barnsley and District Animal Welfare" click HERE for details of this rescue

Hi my name is Amelia.

I have been picked up as a stray so my background isn’t known but I am a medium to large young cross breed who has some big ears! It’s possible I am Shar Pei cross but who knows with us Heinz 57 dogs.

I am very friendly with everyone and I am also very focused and smart for my young age.  In my last home it would seem that I have been trained as I will sit and swop both paws over and I can also lay down.  I am obedient as well as pretty but still unfortunately for me I still have no home of my own.

I am currently keeping all paws crossed that someone out there may just glance my way and see my pics of me laying down and being a good girl.

I have been ok around other dogs and would love to go for some walks very soon as I have lots of energy to burn.  I am approx 18 months old and need a home with people who love some outside adventures and have the time to show me how to be happy and just how fun life can be when you are a wanted and loved dog.

Can you give me the home I deserve this time?

This dog is at Oakenshaw kennels click HERE  for opening times and to arrange a viewing
