We assess the dogs in foster homes and are very honest about their behaviour, temperament and needs. Please read more on our Adoption Page

We are looking for forever homes for our dogs, so please read our dog profiles carefully. Before you contact us, please consult thoroughly with your family: you need to be certain that you can give the dog what it needs both now and for the rest of its life.

Sadly we see spiraling numbers of dogs who suffer terribly because their owners can't afford the lifelong care they need.   Keeping a dog is expensive (especially when they are ill or injured) so please do not apply for one of our dogs unless you are able to pay for it to be kept in the best of health.  We strongly suggest you take out INSURANCE to cover vets bills click HERE

WE DO NOT normally REHOME DOGS WHERE THERE ARE CATS OR CHILDREN UNDER 5 YRS.

DOGS MUST NEVER BE LEFT ALONE WITH CHILDREN.
for information about correctly managing dogs and children here are two good guides from the Kennel Club and Victoria Stilwell

The behaviour of dogs is improved using POSITIVE REWARD BASED TRAINING, FOR VIDEOS SHOWING PRACTICAL EXAMPLES CLICK HERE scroll down to see all 10

Dogs CANNOT be left alone for 8-9 hours.  SO IF YOU WORK FULL TIME we will not rehome a dog to you unless you employ a dog sitter or dog walker, and we recognise there is expense involved with providing this for the dog.  Here is a good example of a professional dog walker that we recommend in the Kirklees area DOGGYNANNY

If you are going on holiday within the next two months and cannot take a dog with you please apply for a dog on your return.  It's not fair to adopt a rescue dog that we have spent so much time and effort to settle and rehabilitate then dump it in kennels.

WE DO NOT SELL DOGS, however we ask for a Charitable donation to be provided on adoption to help towards keeping the rescue running.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT LET DOGS GO OUT "ON TRIAL". You may see the dogs as many times as you like before deciding whether or not to adopt.  Most rescue dogs have been through great stress and taking them home only to return them a short time later because owners change their minds would be cruel and damaging.  Dogs quickly form attachments and must not be returned as if they were mere objects.  So please, think very carefully and don't just take a dog on a whim.  As an adopter you should understand that it can take several weeks for a dog to settle into your home.  You must be prepared to commit to doing whatever is necessary to help your dog become a secure and happy family member. Our returns policy exists purely for those rare circumstances where a new owner is unavoidably unable to keep their new pet.

Prior to visiting our dogs you need to carefully consider a number of issues, please read before applying click HERE

This pretty little puppy is 5mth old Bonnie, a GSD cross Spaniel.

Bonnie is a sweet natured puppy just learning all about life, after spending her first few months in an outdoor shed.

Housetraining is coming along nicely, and she is very bright, so learning new commands daily.

Bonnie has started her vaccinations, so will be fully vaccinated when she goes to her forever home.

Bonnie needs some confidence building so would benefit from living with another dog, or more.

She could learn to live with cats.

Crate trained, and sleeps in there overnight quietly.

Bonnie would be better with children over 7yrs of age.

Currently in the Stoke area of Staffordshire.

Dogs don't come much cuter than our Poppy.

Poppy was found as a stray before coming into our care. She is gorgeous.

Poppy is approximately 2-3 yrs old and as we know nothing of her history we wont place with children under 7yrs of age.

Poppy is just finishing her season, so cannot be spayed for a further 3 months. New owners must sign a Neutering contract, which will be followed up.

Poppy is just an absolute sweetheart! She doesn't appear to have had much training, but will sit, and give her paw. She walks nicely on a Gencon headcollar, her recall has not been tested.

Poppy loves to play, loves to cuddle & is a really friendly, happy go lucky kind of dog.
She is fine with other dogs. Not known how she is with cats. She is not good with livestock, so most likely not good with small furries or cats, or small dogs.

Poppy is clean in her kennel, so should be easy to housetrain. Takes treats gently. Travelled really well in the car.
Poppy has now been microchipped.

This adorable girl will brighten anybody's day.

Currently in kennels in Preston, Lancashire.

< Harvey

Harvey is an ideal family pet for children over 7 years of age where he will get a lot of time, attention and cuddles.

This 4 years old terrier is a super family pet, he has been used to living with a retired man so would suit a fit retired couple.  Harvey has never lived with children but is fine around older children who are kind and sensible with dogs.  He would prefer a peaceful. child free home but would be OK with visiting children over 7 years of age.

Harvey is a committed lapdog, he loves snuggling up on your lap in front of the fire to watch TV.  He loves having his tummy tickled.  He wants to be with you and follows you around like a little shadow.  He sleeps on the end of the foster's bed at night and is quiet until morning.

Harvey is no trouble to live with, he is clean in the house and a good guard dog.  He barks if someone comes to the door to alert you they are there but he is not a noisy dog, the rest of the time he is quiet.  He has travelled short distances in the car with no problems.

He loves going for walks but will be happy with 3 half hour walks each day.  The most important things for Harvey are company and love.

Harvey is good with female dogs, the foster had a Deerhound and Border Terrier.  Sometimes a bit anxious around male dogs because he feels threatened and may snap but he doesn't bite and he is not a fighter.

Needs someone around most of the time, may bark when left and annoy neighbours.

NO CATS PLEASE

For a loyal and loving best friend, Harvey is the dog for you.  He loves to sleep on the sofa so please don't apply if you are too house proud to let him do this.

< Black Pudding

Black Pudding has been on a strict diet since August. He has lost over 8kg & continues to lose weight.

Black Pudding is a fantastic truly remarkable family pet who adores children and wants a home with children over 7 years old. Such children need to be dog-wise, experienced with living with big dogs who are boisterous and with parents who keep a close eye on preventing children and visiting children hurting the dog.

Pudding loves people, he loves them so much he suffers some anxiety when sometimes left alone. He is OK left downstairs at night when he knows someone is in the house but if left alone he sometimes barks and whines which can upset the neighbours. Therefore someone around most of the time is a must have for his new home and best a detached house so if he does have to occasionally be left alone the neighbours won't complain about the barking.

This boy is VERY LOVING. All he wants is to be fussed & cuddled. HE ADORES CHILDREN! His favourite part of the day is going on the school run! He loves nothing more than being fussed by all the kids.

Pudding builds a strong bond with his family. He just wants to please you. He fetches you his toys, your shoes (Not chewed!) as gifts for you. Also he will try to fetch your post but these end up a bit tatty. So may be worth a letter box guard or an outside box.

Pudding doesn't want to share his owners inside the house so will be best as an only dog

Pudding is very good for grooming, very good for the vet, he is very good in the car just lays down quietly.

He has basic training. He will sit, lay down & has good recall as long as there is no prey scent or prey around. He will play ball with you.

He is dog friendly outside the home. He loves to play with other dogs outside. It would be nice for him to make some doggy friends for playtime. Plus he will share his family with other dogs outside the home no problem. It's different in the house however. He is jealous of other dogs in the house. If dogs are visiting then make sure all toys are put away and be aware that he may not want to share his people with the visiting dog.

Pudding has a high prey drive. If given the opportunity would chase cats, birds, rabbits, squirrels, horses, sheep, cows, deer etc. the smaller prey he would likely kill if got hold of them. He would definitely worry farm stock. So he must be kept on lead around farm land & areas where he can be let off must be carefully considered first.

At home Pudding is noise reactive. He will bark at people walking past the house, dogs barking outside, cars etc. He doesn't like fireworks at all and will even react to them on the TV.

In a nutshell he’s a typical spaniel that just needs a family of his own. He needs a child buddy of his own from the age of 7+ that is sensible around dogs & parents that have had experience in dogs in the past & are prepared to put some extra time in training him a bit.

NO CATS PLEASE

In return you will get the most loyal best friend a family could want.

We are looking for a home with

  • lots of attention and love
  • lots of exercise
  • kind dog owners
  • not if both partners work full time
  • children over 7 years
  • no other dog n the household
  • a garden is NOT essential but if you have a garden it must be securely fenced

< Teddy

EXCEPTIONALLY PATIENT, KIND OWNERS NEEDED

SMALL HOLDING OR FARM REQUIRED

Teddy is a very loving and affectionate dog who has fear issues.  He loves to snuggle up on the sofa next to you to watch TV and sleep with you on the bed at night.

Teddy needs mature experienced owners.

Teddy has been badly treated in the past so is sometimes snappy if he is handled in a bossy and confrontational manner as this makes him scared and he gets into self defence mode.  You cannot tell him off this really upsets him, instead you have to negotiate with him and persuade him to do what you want.

Teddy needs you to be very patient with him.  So if you are always rushing off somewhere and need to rush putting his lead on or moving him between rooms then your speed will scare him and he will freeze and refuse to move.

Teddy is good on the lead and needs walks about 30 minutes each.

Teddy is good with other dogs but needs to be the only dog in the home or he could be rehomed with a kind, steady dog.  Teddy sometimes gets jealous when the owner fusses another dog and he will growl.

Please note if he is handled badly Teddy will snap.

NO CATS PLEASE

We are looking for a home with

  • a quiet, countryside location he is fostered on a small holding and is no problem at all.

< Albus

This Jack Russell is just over one year old and has a very sweet and affectionate nature.  He loves cuddles and human contact although is wary of strangers who come into the house until he has chance to get to know them.  He enjoys lots of attention and will snuggle up on your lap to watch TV by the fireside.

Albus is anxious around other dogs and will bark when he sees them when he is on the lead.  He has lived with a very calm Beagle girl and this gave him more confidence with other dogs, we therefore recommend that he lives with a calm dog as a companion or he may suffer Separation Anxiety.

Albus is very playful both with humans and with other dogs that he knows, he loves to play fetch off lead in the park and this is a good way to burn energy.

Albus is not aggressive on any way he is a young dog who has not been well socialised with other dogs so he needs a lot of off lead introduction to dogs and play time with dogs and he is young enough to learn and improve.  he never bites or fights, he just barks.

Albus needs owners who are very experienced with terriers and intelligent at making dogs calm around other dogs.  He needs lots of walks and fun so please do not apply unless you are fit and active.

 < Pip Squeak

Dear little Pip Squeak is 4 years old and has led a very sheltered life being mostly in the house and garden.

Pip Squeak hasn't had much experience of children, just occasional visitors in their early teens.  He is well behaved as long as children don't handle him and try to pick him up.

Pip Squeak needs 4 walks a day about 20 minutes each walk plus he enjoys time in the garden.  He is clean and well behaved in the house, can be left alone for up to four hours without barking or chewing.

We are looking for a home with

  • experienced dog owners
  • someone around most of the time to give him a lot of attention and love
  • a quiet and peaceful home without children but occasional visiting children would be OK as long as they respect dogs and are well behaved
  • regular exercise and good quality food
  • patience with his insecurities around meeting new dogs and people

PLEASE OBTAIN FULL FAMILY COMMITMENT TO DOG OWNERSHIP BEFORE YOU PHONE US

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY FOR THIS DOG IF BOTH PARTNERS IN THE FAMILY WORK FULL TIME.

Neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms.

Phone Kathy 07711617148 between 9.30am - 6.00pm or text any time. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR FULL NAME AND SURNAME IN THE TEXT.

< Minnie

Minnie is a 4 years old Pedigree Miniature Pincher with a very affectionate and gentle personality.  She is initially very nervous around new people but once she gets to know you she is cheeky and playful and loves cuddles.

Minnie is fostered with a small dog and a medium sized dog and is very dog friendly.

Minnie just loves going for long country walks then snuggling up on the sofa in front of the fire. Her favourite place to sleep is on her owner's bed, although she will sleep in her own bed if needed.

Minnie can be left a few hours alone but prefers human and dog companionship

This is an adorable companion and pet.

NO CATS PLEASE

Update from the foster

Minnie is an early riser and is instantly full of beans and keen for everybody to get up and play and to get outside and run about for 20 mins - once she's done this however, she's happy to go back to sleep for a while.

She loves her little dome bed and will sit on top of it if she feels then get her nose in the squashed gap and 'pop' it up again - she's cleaver. We move this between the bedroom and the living room during the day as she likes to get in at different times. She feels the cold so most of the day we've been keeping a jumper on her - she's wearing some of Karma's as they are longer and cover more of her body - Karma doesn't mind - she hates her jumpers!

She's not too keen on stepping out into the rain, but when we had her in a waterproof coat and took her up to the moors she didn't care about the rain or wet - she loved it up there and it would be a shame for her to miss out on 'wild' walks in the future. She's fast - we wont let her off her extendable lead but like keeping a bird in a cage it would be a shame if she was unable to run like the wind from time to time.

She can jump surprisingly high - a vertical take off! And will happily jump up onto the table to see if anything is there - she will respond quickly to a firm 'get down' though - in fact she is good with all the basic vocal commands and being very food oriented I believe she would respond well to treat training for all sorts of things. With her high and fast energy levels she may do well at agility so would make a good pet for someone wanting to do a bit of this.

Her only down side is she's a bin thief and the above mentioned table jumping but sensible positioning of this will resolve.

Her previous owners told me she's not keen on walking sticks, zimmer frames and even wheel chairs - this is untested but should be passed on to new owner.

She is very vocal - very loud when there's a knock at the door or a noise outside and when meeting other dogs in the street - we feel she would respond to distraction training over this with a clicker and treat reward.

We've fed her and our two all at the same time and there have been no issues over food - on her first night we gave them all a raw bone and even then there was no problem at all.

She's a smashing little girl - remarkably affectionate even after a couple of days with us - she's beginning to relax and be funny - playing games with the other dogs.

Ours is a very quiet house really - no TV, small children or lots of comings and goings - with her high energy levels I feel a similar calm environment would be good

We are looking for a home with

  • a countryside home
  • lots of attention and love
  • someone around most of the time
  • experienced, kind dog owners
  • not if both partners work full time
  • children must be over 5 years old, dog-wise and confident.
  • an active home where she will get a lot of exercise
  • a garden is not essential but if you have a garden it must be securely fenced to 6 foot high
  • long term lifestyle and financial security

PLEASE OBTAIN FULL FAMILY COMMITMENT TO DOG OWNERSHIP BEFORE YOU PHONE US

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY FOR THIS DOG IF BOTH PARTNERS IN THE FAMILY WORK FULL TIME.

< Amelia

This dog is with "Barnsley and District Animal Welfare" click HERE for details of this rescue

Hi my name is Amelia.

I have been picked up as a stray so my background isn’t known but I am a medium to large young cross breed who has some big ears! It’s possible I am Shar Pei cross but who knows with us Heinz 57 dogs.

I am very friendly with everyone and I am also very focused and smart for my young age.  In my last home it would seem that I have been trained as I will sit and swop both paws over and I can also lay down.  I am obedient as well as pretty but still unfortunately for me I still have no home of my own.

I am currently keeping all paws crossed that someone out there may just glance my way and see my pics of me laying down and being a good girl.

I have been ok around other dogs and would love to go for some walks very soon as I have lots of energy to burn.  I am approx 18 months old and need a home with people who love some outside adventures and have the time to show me how to be happy and just how fun life can be when you are a wanted and loved dog.

Can you give me the home I deserve this time?

This dog is at Oakenshaw kennels click HERE  for opening times and to arrange a viewing

< Diva

This dog is with Friends of Akitas Rescue

Diva needs calm, quiet owners who are capable of handling a big dog, who can offer a forever home with long term financial and lifestyle security.

Diva is a 3 years old American Akita.  This breed is often overlooked due to bad press but it is a breed that is loyal, docile, intelligent and very affectionate with it's own family.  Akitas are good guard dogs and very  protective over children within their own family.  Akitas do not like being teased and pulled around by children, so sensible dog-wise children are needed who understand how to treat dogs with kindness and respect.  Akitas are strong willed and need experienced, calm owners to treat them fairly.  They are physically strong so need fit, active owners.  Akitas can live to 14-15 years if well cared for and fed good quality diet.

Diva is a friendly and inquisitive dog and she loves to have a fuss.  She is a calm, relaxed girl who shows no signs of toy or food guarding.

NO CATS PLEASE Diva cannot live with cats.

Diva can live with another kind calm male dog.

Diva has not been assessed with children.

We are looking for a forever home with long term stability, financial security, big dog experience, a big enough house and car and well fenced garden.

PLEASE OBTAIN FULL FAMILY COMMITMENT TO DOG OWNERSHIP BEFORE YOU PHONE US

Please do not apply for this dog if you work long hours and intend to leave the dog without having enough time to give it loads of playtime and attention and three good long walks each day no matter what the weather.

We always recommend dogs are kept on the lead around livestock especially as we are in the lambing season now.

PLEASE ensure your car is big enough to travel the dog in comfort and safety without being squashed in causing it to feel cramped and claustrophobic

THIS DOG MUST LIVE INDOORS NOT A KENNEL IN THE GARDEN

< Sky

Sky is with UK German Shepherd Rescue.

We are appealing for a very special home for our lovely Sky.

Sky is only around 3 yrs old, but has problems with her hips & hocks, which mean she will only be mobile for a few years.  Her Xrays show bone overgrowth and the vet has informed us there is no option for surgery.

So Sky needs a special home, who will exercise her regularly but not over do it.  She would not be able to do hilly walks, or long hikes.  She would benefit greatly from swimming, and the rescue will pay for 2 hydrotherapy sessions per month for her for life.  Her weight needs to be kept low, and she would benefit from supplements such as Yumove, green lipped mussel, and glucosamine & chondroitin.

Sky is a happy girl, who rarely needs pain relief, but will need it more as time goes on.  Worst case scenario in approx 2yrs time , she wont be able to hold her back end up.  Best case scenario she will potter around for a couple of years and hopefully reach 7 or 8 yrs old.   We simply don't know.

Sky has so much love to give.  She adores children.  She is fine with other dogs.  She is housetrained, travels well, and really enjoys the walks she does.  Her recall is good.

NO CATS PLEASE

Please can somebody open their hearts to this lovely girl, and cherish her for the rest of her days? THE SKY IS THE LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF LOVE SHE WILL GIVE YOU.

Currently in foster care nr Oldham, Lancs

PLEASE ensure your car is big enough to travel the dog in comfort and safety without being squashed in causing it to feel cramped and claustrophobic
